MEDes Manifesto 2007

Here is the version of the MEDes manifesto that we came up with in Glasgow last year. This is by no means a final version as the programme is changing all the time. So please add your comments and suggestions and hopefully we will have a more complete version for the Paris workshop in March.

Below are some of my suggestions for change. Add your thoughts…

Joanne

The Master of European Design

7 schools
5 years
3 destinations
1 Master of European Design

Core Values

The Master of European Design (MEDes) is a unique network of seven leading European design schools. During the five year programme, students are integrated into three design education systems and join a strong international community. These diverse experiences provide them with different approaches to design, multi-national perspectives and sensitivity to cultural differences.

MEDes students learn beyond traditional education. They gain a better understanding of European cultures and develop advanced language and communication skills, enabling them to collaborate efficiently with people from various backgrounds.

MEDes graduates share a motivation for personal development, openness to opportunities and challenges, and passion for design.

Visions for the MEDes

  • create a distinctive and extensive awareness of the programme within the design industry
  • create and maintain a useful communication platform (internal + external)
  • strengthen involvement of postgraduates and the benefits that can be derived from this network
  • clarify and balance the communication of the strengths of each MEDes school
  • to be recognised as students of all seven design schools, by expanding collaborative projects and teaching
  • to make the MEDes workshop more relevant to developing the MEDes programme

Visions of MEDes

Master of European Design (MEDes) strives to produce strong, critical, analytical, adaptive individuals with high awareness of multi-cultural environments. These strengths are the basis of a new paradigm of European design, which can benefit us as a global community.

Comments

so my comments are:

In the header: 'Destinations' sounds like a holiday so what about '3 Design Schools'?

In the Core Values paragraph: 'multi-national' sounds like we are talking about microsoft, bill gates and taking over the world. How about 'international'? Also we need a different word than 'sensitivity' because we are not the only people sensitive to cultural differences! Later, how about 'effectively' instead of 'efficiently'?

some grammatical corrections: MEDes graduates share a motivation for personal development, an openness to opportunities and challenges, and a passion for design.

Visions for the MEDes paragraph: can we call this 'Aims of the MEDes' as 'visions for' and 'visions of' are very confusing? Also I was told that this title is quite obscure and unclear. 'aims' or 'objectives' is probably better to describe all the things we want to do in the near future as listed.

Visions of MEDes paragraph: Firstly, it's 'Visions of the MEDes' Don't forget the 'thes': The Master of European Design... And there should be an 'and' before adaptive. 'which can benefit us as a global community.' HOW??? eg. by using our network to share knowledge and skills in business... etc...

My Final comment suggestion would be to change the order of the paragraphs so that it would be: Core values, then the vision and then the aims.

What does anyone else think? If we can discuss and agree on some of the points then I will keep updating the above statement, and in that way we will hopefully come to a statement that is more finalised for this years MEDes.
